Acoustic metamaterials for new two-dimensional sonic devices

چکیده
It has been shown that two-dimensional arrays of rigid or fluidlike cylinders in a fluid or a gas define, in the limit of large wavelengths, a class of acoustic metamaterials whose effective parameters (sound velocity and density) can be tailored up to a certain limit. This work goes a step further by considering arrays of solid cylinders in which the elastic properties of cylinders are taken into account. We have also treated mixtures of two different elastic cylinders. It is shown that both effects broaden the range of acoustic parameters available for designing metamaterials. For example, it is predicted that metamaterials with perfect matching of impedance with air are now possible by using aerogel and rigid cylinders equally distributed in a square lattice. As a potential application of the proposed metamaterial, we present a gradient index lens for airborne sound (i.e. a sonic Wood lens) whose functionality is demonstrated by multiple scattering simulations. 1 Author to whom any correspondence should be addressed. The Effect of Antenna Movement and Material Properties on Electromagnetically Induced Transparency in a Two-Dimensional Metamaterials
Increasing development of nano-technology in optics and photonics by using modern methods of light control in waveguide devices and requiring miniaturization and electromagnetic devices such as antennas, transmission and storage as well as improvement in the electromagnetic tool, have led researchers to use the phenomenon of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and similar phenomena i...
متن کاملIntroduction to the special issue on acoustic metamaterials.
The field of acoustic metamaterials is a relatively new topic in applied physics that has broad appeal in the scientific community because of the potential for realizing physical phenomena that had previously been deemed impossible. Acoustic metamaterials have been proposed to achieve both exotic behavior, such as acoustic cloaks and sub-wavelength resolution acoustic lenses, and to enhance eng...
متن کاملMeasurement of a broadband negative index with space-coiling acoustic metamaterials.
We report the experimental demonstration of a broadband negative refractive index obtained in a labyrinthine acoustic metamaterial structure. Two different approaches were employed to prove the metamaterial negative index nature: one-dimensional extractions of effective parameters from reflection and transmission measurements and two-dimensional prism-based measurements that convincingly show t...
متن کاملRecent Developments in Sonic Crystals
The properties of sonic bandgap crystals will be reviewed and recent results obtained by our group will be reported. Particularly, the homogenization method based on multiple scattering theory will be presented and applied to the case of two-dimensional (2D) structures consisting of fluid-fluid and solid-fluid composites [1, 2]. The method is general and it is employed to get the effective para...
متن کاملA High Order Approximation of the Two Dimensional Acoustic Wave Equation with Discontinuous Coefficients
This paper concerns with the modeling and construction of a fifth order method for two dimensional acoustic wave equation in heterogenous media. The method is based on a standard discretization of the problem on smooth regions and a nonstandard method for nonsmooth regions. The construction of the nonstandard method is based on the special treatment of the interface using suitable jump conditio...
